What else would a place, named for hedonistic joy, have to offer - but plenty of fabulous food and good times?
Pleasure Island, North Carolina, located just east of Wilmington, is dishing up plenty of “yums” and tons of fun with their 11th Annual Chowder Cookoff.
Home to both Carolina and Kure Beaches - the barrier island knows how to please its visitors in any season and springtime in no exception.
For those wanting to build up an appetite a 10K run/1 mile Fun Run/Walk begins at 9AM. The mayors of both beach communities have drawn the proverbial line in the dirt (sand, in this case) and are challenging each other. No word on what the winner will receive, but expect plenty of good-natured rooting along the route.
Running from the Fort Fisher Recreation Center on the south end of the island, runners will progress through the town of Kure Beach and on to the ocean.
The place to be is at Carolina Beach Lake Park at 12:00 pm when the chowder starts running. Pay your $5.00, hold out your bowl and get ready to savor the flavor that makes the Cape Fear region an epicurean delight.
Leading off the charge of cream or tomato based soups are entries from local restaurants Water Street Market, Jack Mackerel’s Island Grill, Courtyard Marriott/Got ‘Em On Live Bait Club, SeaWitch Café and Tiki Bar, Fat Tony’s Italian Pub, and O’Charley’s.
Everyone will get the chance to vote on his or her favorites by filling out a ballot. While the rivalry is friendly, regional bragging rights remain an important ingredient at the festivities.
What is a party without music?
Dull!
The Cookoff grooves with live entertainment at the park’s Stingray Amphitheater by the band “Maco.” Family action is guaranteed throughout the day by visiting the park’s playground or the Kidz Zone with face painting, balloon art and inflatable amusements.
For an additional fee you can rent a paddleboat and restart your taste buds for more chowder.
Chowder is served until 5:00PM when the judging and awarding of prizes will be announced.
Children 11 years old and younger are free. With food and beverages available – leave your cooler at home or in the car. Chairs, blankets and children are welcome, but please leave your pets at home too.
De-stress your life and park for FREE at the Federal Point Shopping Center and ride the FREE trolley to Carolina Beach Lake.
Let the pleasure begin!
