Wilmington, and the neighboring region, present holiday traditions from any of the four centuries in her well seasoned past.

No need to fear anything in the Cape Fear River’s port city and surrounding area. Nothing but plenty of holiday merriment and glad tidings are offered for every age and interest.

To National Public Radio listeners veteran broadcaster Carl Kasell is an old friend. And what is better than getting together with old friends during the holidays? On December 7th Mr. Kasell, and others like best selling mystery writer, Margaret Maron, will be at radio station WHQR for the yearly Homemade Holiday Shorts program. Seasonal music accompanies holiday readings. Kasell will be reading, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Grinch, Max and Cindy Lou all turned 50 years old in 2007.

Question? How many light bulbs does it take to decorate a battleship? Answer? A lot! From December 7th through January 6th, the USS North Carolina sparkles, as she is dressed, in her seasonal finery from bow to stern. And do not forget the masts! Pick a spot, across the Cape Fear River, along Wilmington’s thriving waterfront for your best view.

Keep the Christmas spirit high steppin’ on December 9th when the 5th Annual City of Wilmington Holiday Parade begins at 5:30 at the corner of Walnut and Red Cross Streets. Join the locals, and one special out of town guest, a certain Mr. Claus, for the downtown trek that features festive seasonal fun!

The beloved Christmas classic, It’s a Wonderful Life has been through a transformation into a radio play and has been appearing across the country recently, and Wilmington has joined the celebration. Bring your imagination to the Thalian Hall on December 15th as the heartening life of George Bailey, the angelic Clarence and the simplicity of Zuzu’s rose petals remind us all of the true holiday spirit.

In case you are ignorant to the joys of the original 1946 movie, starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, head over to Kenan Auditorium on the University of North Carolina/Wilmington campus on December 21st where filmmaker, Frank Capra, Jr. (son of film’s director, Frank Capra) will lead off the celebratory viewing. The event is free. Call 910 962 3500 for more details.

The Burgwin-Wright House was called the “most considerable house in town” during the mid 18th century. 230 plus years later it is still thought to be charming by her visitors – especially during the holidays. On Saturday and Sunday, December 15 and 16, her doors open to display colonial Christmas traditions complete with carolers, dancing and some wassail.

Why are you still reading?
